                                        BIG DOG LOST

I wait for Tommy at the bus stop. He walks up with tears in his eyes.

“What’s the problem?” I ask him. I am not sure if I should pat him on the back or stay far back.

“My dog,” he says.  “My dog is missing. Mom says I have to get on the bus. She will look for Sport before she goes to work.” Tommy is crying now. He is crying hard and his whole body is shaking. I pat him on the back. Two first graders are at the bus stop now and they are looking at us.

“Are you talking about a big brown dog?” one of the little kids asks.  She moves her hands to show how big she means. “A big brown dog with a white spot on an ear?”

Tommy looks up. “Yes,” he says. “That sounds like Sport.” Tommy is smiling now.

“That dog is in our backyard right now,” the girl says. “My father thinks it belongs to someone on our street. It looks lost.”

Tommy gets on the bus. The girl uses Tommy’s phone to call her father. It’s going to be a good day after all.
